A story that my Nana has always told since I was a little girl, was of a big, mighty horse, who thought he was immortal and invincible. This mighty horse traveled many a great land. This specific horse was very, very strong indeed! One day, many years after his birth, he was met on the road by a strange old woman. The old woman stopped him and warned him of his impending doom. He scoffed and snorted at the old woman and rode on. There again was the woman! She stopped him again and told him his time was almost up. Again, the horse snorted angrily, then galloped away. A few miles down the same road, the old woman appeared again. She told him,”Horse, no matter how far you run, no matter how strong you are, you cannot evade death.” And with that, the mighty horse fell. The moral of this story is that death is inevitable, just like in The Appointment in Samarra,”I will flee Baghdad and there Death will not find me!” The difference between the two was that the horse was unafraid of Death, while the merchants servant was terrified. Another similarity was that they both fled from the signs of death. Both stories involve death and running away from the unstoppable.
